UP's intern doctors stipend hike demand gains momentum on Labour day, Congress, SP too voice support

On labour day, social media platforms especially twitter was filled with demands of raising the stipend of intern doctors in Uttar Pradesh who are protesting since a week in demand of equal pay for them in line with central medical colleges.
The stipend paid to interns in UP is lowest as compared to other states. Medogle first reported it a week ago.

The issue of the low stipend paid of MBBS interns working was recently raised by the Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi in a tweet, where she asked the UP Chief Minister to look into thier issue and increase their pay .
Gandhi on Monday raised the issue of low salary paid to the intern doctors performing their duty amid the nationwide lockdown to combat coronavirus and demanded that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath should raise their pay.
Taking to twitter, she re-tweeted the appeal of United Resident Doctors Association (UP), where the resident doctors body pointed out the intern doctors in the state get the least stipend amoungst all the states that is Rs 250 per day which is also less than the wage of a daily wage labourer.
There are over 40 private and government medical colleges in UP, where more than 2,500 intern doctors offer their services. Those doing their internships are given a stipend worth just Rs 7500 per month, which is the lowest in the country.
The stipend that is given in other states is nearly twice or more. For instance, a stipend of Rs 23,000 is being given in Central Medical Colleges. At the same time, Rs 16,590 is being given in West Bengal, Rs 15,000 in Punjab. Even in the other states, the stipend given is more than that in UP.
Intern MBBS doctors in UP are performing their duty in this crisis with all sincerity. Their lives are also in danger. And they get only Rs 250 per day. Chief Minister Yogi Aditynathji, their salary is very low. In my understanding, it is your duty to increase the salary of intern doctors at this time of crisis," Priyanka Gandhi, who is also the party in-charge for eastern Uttar Pradesh, said in a tweet.
State's main opposition party Samajwadi Party too raised the issue of raising the stipend amount of interns who are providing their selfless service during the times of Corona emergency.

Different organisations such as IMA - Medical Students Network, All India Medical Students Association ( AIMSA) and United Residents Doctors Association (URDA) had written a letter in this regard to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
