The early warning bells of depression you shouldn't ignore!!

Depression is one of the commonest disorder affecting millions of people worldwide. 1 in four individual is suffering from depression in one way or other and majority is unaware of their mental status. In fact, most people who have it have family and friends that aren’t aware. And this makes the condition a lot harder to deal with.

Depression is classified as a mood disorder. It may be described as feelings of sadness, loss, or anger that interfere with a person’s everyday activities.

The World Health Organization predicts that by 2020, depression will be the second-leading cause of disability in the world, just behind cardiovascular disease.

People who are depressed are far more likely to have other chronic medical conditions, including cardiovascular disease, back problems, arthritis, diabetes, and high blood pressure, and to have worse outcomes. Untreated depression can even affect your immune response to some vaccines.

Depression is not just debilitating; it can be deadly. An estimated one out of five people with depression will attempt suicide at some point.

If you suspect that you have depression, check out these early warning signs  so you can take appropriate measures from early stage .

1. Irritability

During  the initial stages, irritability is an obvious signal.However, despite being common, a lot of people actually miss it.  One may simply associate a depressed person’s irritability with having a bad day. The problem is that this irritability can stem from really petty things. People with depression can easily lash out at family members and friends.

2. Changes in Sleeping pattern.

If you are finding it hard to sleep for one or two days, it shouldn’t really worry you as it may be a simple case of insomnia. But, if you are having sleeping issues for several days already, that’s a different story.

Depressed people find it hard to fall and stay asleep even though they feel excessively tired. In some cases, they’ll sleep too much and struggle to wake up in the morning. They’ll take frequent naps during the day and will display an eagerness to get to bed early.

3. Low Energy levels

People suffering from depression often feel low  and less enthusiastic in their work.  They are  likely to get tired easily and their  usual tasks will take longer to complete.

4. Concentration problems

Concentration problems is another early warning bells suggestive of being depressive. Depression can make you forget things, misplace everyday objects and decrease your ability to stay focussed on task.

5. Reckless Behaviors

Not all people with depression will shy away from others and lock themselves at home. There are depressed people who will gamble, commit to risky sexual behaviors and do drugs just to mask how they really feel. Although these activities can provide relief, it’s only temporary.

In case you notice yourself engaging in these kinds of activity lately, it could be a sign that you’re having a hard time coping with an internal problem.

6. Changes in Appetite

Changes in daily eating habits is also an early sign of disease. Experts suggest that this happens due to the other effects of depression to your body. Take, for example, fatigue and lack of pleasure in activities you used to enjoy.

When you are tired, you won’t have the energy to prepare your food and you’ll be uninterested to eat. In some cases, depression can also come with nausea and vomiting and these two can make it hard for you to consume food.

There are also some people who overeat during the early stages of depression and this is beyond the normal acts.

7. Recurrent Thoughts of Death

A lot of depressed people spend a lot of time planning about how they can harm themselves.  Psychiatrists consider this as active suicidal thoughts and these thoughts need to be addressed right away.

Passive suicidal thoughts, on the other hand, involve wishing and hoping of dying. A person thinks and hopes to never wake up or get hit by a car on his way home.
Thoughts of death triggered by depression are something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. If you can’t stop thinking about dying, it’s time to get some help.

8. Feeling Guilty

The feeling of being worthless is very common. Depressed people are overly critical of themselves that they start to take the blame for almost anything.

If you have been feeling guilty from a mistake you did when you were still young or for ending your marriage for valid reasons, pay close attention to your inner monologue. It could be a clear sign that something’s not right.

9. Apathy

Even if you want to feel happy, excited or surprised- you just can’t.

When you’re depressed, you seem to be unable to feel anything. You find it hard to be intimate with your loved ones or even enjoy some quality time with friends. A sense of numbness develops among patients.

10. Start of Physical Symptoms

When you are battling mental health issues, it’s possible that you’ll feel physical symptoms, too. Remember, your mind and body have a special connection. So, when something isn’t right with your way of thinking, that can translate to physical symptoms.
